Good luck in school, Jessie! Where do you go? You may hate me for this, but, if you've never checked out http://www.obxconnection.com/outer-banks-message-board/ then you should. You'll find many like-minded folks there, but, mostly old farts like me! If nothing else, you can enjoy all the pics of the beach folks regularly post. And if you do get hooked on the site, don't hate me too much! ;-)

My Experience

* I Got: I don't really go for the Apple Uglies, but I do prefer the cheese danishes and donut holes
* It Tasted: Like Heaven
*It Cost: Not sure, because Jessie's lovely family usually treats us, but I'm sure its affordable and even if their pastries were overpriced, they'd be worth it
*Wait Time: Only been there once, but I remember a long line, that moved rather fast

Actual Review

    * Cleanliness: 10/10 From what I remember its super clean
    * Service: 10/10 They are charming :)
    * Wait Time: 8/10 You do have to wait, but you will be enjoying the smells and not notice
    * Family-Oriented: 10/10 Everyone of all ages loves pastries!
    * Price: 10/10 I live in CA, where danishes are $5.00, so this place is piece of fresh air.
    * Taste: 10/10 Even a few hours after we buy them, they are still super tasty
    * Atmosphere: 9.5/10 I remember some cuteness in there, but nothing fancy
    * Location: 9/10 Right off the highway
    * Variety: 10/10 Its hard to decide, so we usually get one of everything
    * Portion Size: 10/10 For the price, huge
    * Overall Rating: 96.5/100

In conclusion,

*This place puts Starbucks and Krispy Kreme to shame!

Oh my gosh... I've never heard of such awful service at the Dolphin Den! We've gone for three years and have never once been disappointed. The service does change yearly though, so please do not be discouraged to never go back! If you guys would have a good server, I'm sure you would like this place! I'm so sad to hear of your awful experience... but if you are willing to give it another chance next year, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Last Friday, on our last night at the beach, my family ate at the Dolphin Den.

While the food was average, the waiter was the worst I've ever had. A tall gangly sort of beach bum looking guy, he was slow and never asked how our food was. We asked for more butter when he brought our meal, he never came back. My sister-in-law went to get him. When he came with the butter, he asked how things were and my brother-in-law said that our potatoes got cold waiting for the butter. At this point, the waiter started talking baby-talk in a sarcastic manner saying "Aw, is your potato cold? I'm so sorry. I wouldn't want your potato to be cold." and walked away.

When I went to complain to the manager, the hostess said there wasn't one. When I ask for who was in charge, she said she would find someone, who turned out to be the cook, who, based on his manner was a friend of the waiter, saying the waiter was under some stress. He didn't take us seriously until we implied we were documenting his answers for the owner.

In my entire life, I have never been so disrespected by a waiter. If you get anything like this kind of treatment, don't pay the bill.

Just read this quote I found:

"Every once in a while the ocean is so clear you can stand in the surf up to your neck and see your toes. That's the way it was yesterday. Usually the waves stir up quite a bit of sand and swirl it around, giving the water a darker hue. But Thursday the waves were gentle and the Atlantic took on the appearance of the Caribbean with water the color of coke-bottle green. Even so, there were waves, but not the wild and crashing type. They just welled up and rolled over us as we bobbed gently in the warm, summer sea. Ahhh!"

We definitely can't wait to meet him next year when we visit Ocracoke!

don't be a hater, we need to close access from morons who trash the beach and drive all over the nests, there have been 6 attacks on marked nests by uneducated morons, there are to many people on the obx and beach driving is a serious problem, if we want to preserve it try fighting for the environment and keeping it clean and healthy and then the beaches will stay open for recreating. not closed from pollution and moronic wreck less behavior

Jessie, you're a fun read! You enthusiasm really comes through. I just bought a home on Ocracoke. See the website link with this comment. It's funny that you talk about Capt. Ben's. Its the one restaurant on Ocracoke I've never tried in my 20+ years visiting the island! I'll be headed out there either the last week of Sept. or first week of Oct. for a couple weeks.

I wanted to send you an email, but couldn't find one, so I'll just comment here. :)

I am equally obsessed with the OBX. We started going about six years ago with our family, and have been every year except one, and I was pretty bummed when we weren't able to make it down.

This year will be our first year with yet another rental company, this is the third one we've tried. So far, so good. We're staying in Buxton, soundside, and I'm pretty excited because we should have some awesome views of the sunset. Two years ago we renewed our vows on Canadian Hole, it was amazing!

I too am hoping to become a resident someday. It's a dream of mine. I just love it there so much. I have great fishing tips, if anyone want some. And I have a great restaurant recommendation, SmackNalley's (sp?) on Ocracoke. Right on the water, can be bit crowded, but good stuff at a good price. Have you been to Bubba's? What do you think?

We're headed down the last week in Aug., and I can hardly wait!

Anyway, thanks SO much for all your info. I passed it around to some friends. I'm the world's biggest advocate to get ppl to travel to the OBX.

One thing that would be cool, is if you could blog something about the trip down, that it's really one road in and one road out. It was kind of unexpected, the first time we went, how long it would really take.

Anyway, keep up the good work, and I have your site bookmarked! Thanks again!

My Experience

    * I Got: Ceaser salad, fried chicken, and linguini. Ceaser was okay - the dressing was slightly off and the linguini was good, but had a bit too much olive oil. The chicken was absolutely perfect! The take real chicken breast, cut them up, batter them, and deep fry. The taste is phenomenal. I ended the meal with the famous Key Lime Pie, which I was too full to eat and took home for later. Even the next day, it was delicious.
    *It Cost: $20, substituting the salad for cole slaw added 2.50 and had dessert.
    *Wait Time: Not bad. Probably 5-10 minutes for a large family. They accommodate large families well with oversized booths and long tables.

Actual Review

    * Cleanliness: 10/10
    * Service: 10/10 Very efficient
    * Wait Time: 9/10
    * Family-Oriented: 10/10
    * Price: 9.5/10
    * Taste: 10/10
    * Atmosphere: 10/10 - Lots to look at!
    * Location: 9/10 - Unique looking building
    * Variety: 9/10 - For a non-seafood eater, I was greatly satisfied with the options
    * Portion Size: 10/10 - Couldn't finish!
    * Overall Rating: 96.5/100

In conclusion,

    * I would recommend this restaurant: Absolutely! The staff is friendly, the menu is great, and prices are fair. With fried chicken, cornbread appetizer, and great tea, you can't forget you're in The South!

My Experience

    * I Got: 8 oz sirloin with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The steak was cooked perfectly a medium-well. The mashed potatoes had a bit too much garlic and the vegetables were bland. The appetizers (shark bites and hush puppies) made up for the poor side items, however. Come for the hush puppies and nothing else really matters!
    *It Cost: $20ish
    *Wait Time: Were seated right away and the waistress was friendly and accurate. She didn't check in on us often, but I prefer that.

Actual Review

    * Cleanliness: 8/10 - Blinds were broken and some members of our party had to sit with the sun in their faces. Was not properly fixed when asked.
    * Service: 9/10 - Drinks were refilled on time, but waitress was not constantly hovering at our table.
    * Wait Time: 9.5/10 - Not a problem at all
    * Family-Oriented: 9.5/10 - Kids would love the aquariums - the one in the main dining room has an eel.
    * Price: 9/10 - Free hush puppies!
    * Taste: 8/10
    * Atmosphere: 9/10 - Again, the aquariums
    * Location: 8.5/10 - No spectacular views, but easy to find
    * Variety: 8.0/10 - Could use some more unique turf choices
    * Portion Size: 10/10 - I was stuffed!
    * Overall Rating: 88.5/100

In conclusion,

    * Try the shark bites - even if you aren't a seafood eater like me! The hush puppies are best thing about the restaurant and will have you going back.

    * Overall Rating: 88.5/100

    * Try the shark bites – even if you aren’t a seafood eater like me! The hush puppies are best thing about the restaurant and will have you going back.
