What You Can Do To Help
Helping is easy, and there are so many ways. Each small thing helps the cause so please, please, PLEASE help out in any way you can.
Express Your Opinions/Keep Yourself Updated
- Call/E-Mail your State US Senators & US Representatives and ask them to vote for Senate Bill S.3113 & House Bill HR 6233.
- Provide any information about vandalism and please respect the closed off areas until this nonsense can be solved… we don’t want to close off more due to ignorance.
- Visit these sites to write your voice your opinion: National Park Service (252)-473-2111 and the US Senators Page (chose your state)!
- Pick up any flyers and information packets while you visiting to keep yourself and everyone updated on the current situation. That includes local newspapers such as the Islander Breeze which I found to have AMAZING and touching editorials from locals about the subject.
- Sign the online petition! With already over 7,500 signatures, it’s easy to see how many people this effects. Show you care! This takes seconds to do and you should send it to all your friends.
Donate! This is pocket change to save an island & it’s innocent people, preserve your past memories, and ensure years and years of delightful memories to come.
- At just about every gift shop on Hatteras & Ocracoke Island, there was a jar set up with the picture from the CHAPA site (with the cars on the beach) where you can donate money. Most of the store owners will thank you for donations and talk to you about it so you can get information. They are very helpful and all committed to the cause. Remember, any amount helps!
- My main beach closure page features a photo of the back of my Jeep, and the bumper sticker I got down there. I’m not sure where all you can find them but I got mine at the little convenience shop connected to Red Drum Tackle in Buxton. They cost $2.00 and the money goes straight into the HELP US jars, no weird % of proceeds go to the store or any of that political nonsense a lot of “causes” have ties with. Your money goes straight to the real thing… legal fees, getting out information, etc.
- Cape Hatteras Access Prevention Alliance provides several options. CHAPA TEES Click on the link to order a tee shirt, sizes available from S – XXXL and range from $20.00 – $22.00. I am yet to get one but will as soon as I get a paycheck, I really want to wear one constantly, and you should to and show everyone that you support free and open access to all. You also receive a free bumper sticker with every purchase. *NOTE* No, I am not sure if there is a shop that sells these or similar shirts on the island or not, although I saw a couple people wearing these or similar shirts, yet didn’t have a chance to ask where they got them from. Someone told me Frank & Fran’s Tackle (Avon), but I am not sure about that at all, so if anyone has any information about this, please let me know so I can inform everyone. I’m sure there is a location, but if not, order one easily from this site. Simple Donations can be made by mail or online. Any amount is acceptable! Register For Use On CHAPA Message Boards, etc. This allows you to become more informed and familiar with the cause while finding out more ways you can help. Volunteer. Every cause needs volunteers. Finally, Link To CHAPA on your site so you can inform and inspire others to help the cause before it’s too late.
- Outer Banks Preservation Association will take your money in several ways to help the cause. Simple ANY DOLLAR AMOUNT DONATIONS. You can also become a member or purchase decals/license plates by clicking here.
And don’t forget all of the additional information sites that you can access below or from the main beach closure page. Each one is informative and helpful so please, give them your time! This is a serious issue.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, remember, the OBX is a place you love. You probably grew up loving it, or maybe you have a more recent appreciation. It doesn’t matter. DON’T STOP VISITING JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS! This is the whole problem in the first place, don’t add to it! Show everyone you will continue to visit and assist the economy. Summer tourism is slowing… there are so many statistics from different business about how they have lessened in profits form last year to this year… don’t be a part of that statistic that says ##% less people visit. It’s just nonsense, and is letting the Audubon Society win. If someone tried to keep you from accessing your loved one, would you stay away? Treat the beach with the same regards, don’t give up on the place you love, put up a fight for what you believe in, and don’t let them take your beaches.
