“Hatteras Island, especially the Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo areas, have been devastated by Hurricane Irene. My mission is to raise awareness, and help local Hatteras Island Organizations raise money to support their Hurricane Irene disaster relief efforts.
The week after Irene passed over was when locals needed the most help in man-power, but I was too busy to help. My mission at that time was providing video coverage to over 100,000 people on facebook, news channels, and conducting interviews for the Associated Press and radio stations. Raising awareness of the disaster on Hatteras Island was my #1 priority, since it seemed the mainstream media didn’t really care.
Now that a lot of people have an idea of what is going on down here, it is my goal to use this awareness, and raise money for the recovery of this beautiful local community. The faster the Hatteras Island locals can get their lives back to a sense of normalcy, the sooner they will be able to welcome visitors to their beautiful Island.” -Kurt Kessler (Outer Beaches Realty)
Hurricane Irene tore through the Outer Banks and much of the East Coast leaving thousands of people without food, power, homes, etc. The OBX took a hard hit and as I am sure you know, access to Hatteras Island is still unavailable to anyone other than residents (and even that access is shaky). These people need help. If you feel like me, I know you want to get in your car, drive down to Salvo, and start helping people clean up but since that is out of the question, you can make monetary donations or send much needed items.
I have put together a list of charities/organizations, etc. that I have come across on Facebook, the realty websites, and OBX Connection. My hope is that by compiling the list, I can get the information out there for those who want to help. I know that sometimes the hardest part of donating is just figuring out how. If you know of any other charitable organizations in which all of the proceeds go to The Outer Banks community, please, please contact me via a comment or my e-mail (jmsee1789@gmail.com) and I will add it to the list.
Can’t Make A Donation?
You can still help! Spread word on these charities to everyone you know. Spread the videos showing the true damage (I recommend this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FqFZW6pwD4). Keep coming back to the OBX. Many local business owners are losing money (especially the ones on Hatteras & Ocracoke Island) who are going to be without tourist income for over a month.
Where To Donate
1) Help 4 Hatteras – Fundraiser started by Kurt Kessler of OBR. Accepting donations and will soon have products available for purchase. Primarily assists the Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo area.
2) Help Hatteras Island Irene Victims – (facebook link) Great fundraiser by Kaia’s Kitchen in Hatteras, NC. They are providing meals for everyone on the island. Approximately 600 people need meals a day.
